Conservas La Costeña is the leading canned food products company in Mexico. Originally founded in 1923, the company has grown to become one of the most recognized and celebrated brands of the Hispanic market. La Costeña sells its products in virtually every city in Mexico as well as in over 40 countries around the world (including the USA and Canada, where the brand is managed and distributed by Vilore Foods).
Conservas La Costeña was founded by Vicente López Resines in 1923. It all started when he bought a small grocery shop in Mexico City that was called “La Costeña”. The store became popular when Mr. López began storing and selling jalapeño peppers in 20 Kg jars filled with natural alcohol and vinegar so they would last longer. By 1937 La Costeña started its own jar company and this decision changed the future of the business. In 1951 the company started its industrialization by applying the first automatic production line of 3kg cans. With the help of forklift trucks and its own delivery vehicles, La Costeña grew up rather quickly; it increased its product line with different canned goods (including olives and other types of peppers) and expanded its distribution territory. Just four years later, the company installed another automated production line for 105g canned products.
In 1975, La Costeña expanded again to cover the U.S. market and quickly developed an important reputation in the country. Since then, the company has experienced consistent growth and has founded three new production plants and over 30 distribution centers to meet the growing market demand for their products.
La Costeña’s marketshare and reach have expanded worldwide, exporting products to over 40 countries around the world. According to trade magazine Entrepreneur México, La Costeña controls over 60% of the world’s chile market, with 16% of its output being exported to other countries.
