Now in its 37th year, La Costeña partnered with the Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association for the privilege to be The Official Title Sponsor of this year’s Jalapeno Festival. It has been a long standing tradition for Vilore Foods Company to give back to the community by participating every year in the WBCA Celebrations.
As title sponsors, we decided to bring the La Costeña Mobile Kitchen to the event, so event goers could get a taste of some of our delicious easy-to-make recipes & try La Costeña products. We also gave free La Costeña products and gifts to festival goers who participated in the La Costeña’s spinning wheel.
This year’s WBCA Jalapeño Festival in Laredo, Texas, also featured the Stripes Miss Jalapeño contest, the international waiter’s race, the egg toss, the grito contest and the immensely popular tug-of-war. But, it’s the La Costeña Jalapeño Eating Contest that holds court.
Die-hard contestants travel from as far away as the Big Apple to test their gastronomic endurance to determine who can eat the most jalapeños in what may seem like an eternity– 15 minutes. The record number of jalapeños eaten, set 21 yrs ago, stands at 141.
This year’s winner was Jose Antonio Marchan; he won by eating 76 jalapenos!!! Mr. Aniceto Mata, last year’s winner, came in 2nd place, eating 60 jalapenos. In 3rd place, Paula Zamora, who ate 50 jalapenos. Marchan’s grand prize consisted of a $1,500 Cash Prize, along with proudly carrying the title of the La Costeña’s Jalapeno Eating Contest Winner.
